Karla M. Kincannon

About This Author

Karla M. Kincannon, is the Director of Field Education and Vocational Formation and Church Leadership, and the artist-in-residence, at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL. As an artist, author, spiritual director, and minister, Karla believes God’s gift of creativity is an essential tool for navigating the spiritual journey and a necessary element for the corporate life of the Church. Without creativity we cannot imagine a life faithful to the gospel. Imagination supports the restoration of soul in our Church and our world. Karla invites others to be courageously creative as a way of experiencing the creative heart of God in order to change the world. Karla is and author, leads workshops, and facilitates retreats in a variety of ecumenical settings nationwide. As a liturgical artist and designer of sacred spaces, Karla uses the arts in worship to invite others into an experience of the Holy. As a spiritual director and retreat leader, she invites others to experience the arts as a means of discovering soul and knowing the creative heart of God. She believes art is both a means of prayer and a method of proclaiming the good news. Karla earned a Bachelor’s degree in art from Virginia Wesleyan College and a Masters of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She is currently working on her Doctor of Ministry in Spiritual Direction. Karla has experience as a church pastor, a college chaplain and campus minister, conflict mediator, as well as more than two decades of work in the healing arts as a spiritual director. Karla founded SpiritArt Ministries to help individuals and congregations encounter the living God through the use of their creativity.
