The burden of religion

June 30th, 2020

“After the hard sayings of Jesus over the last few weeks it is a relief to come to this week’s Gospel lesson from Matthew 11:25-30,” says Jim Somerville, pastor of Richmond’s First Baptist Church and co-founder of A Sermon for Every Sunday. “Come to me all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest,” Jesus says. But the “heavy burdens” Jesus has in mind may be the rules and requirements loaded onto his hearers by the scribes and Pharisees.

In this sermon, Somerville takes a very personal journey through his own experience of “the burden of religion” and his eventual deliverance.
