Love In A Big World: Courtesy

January 20th, 2017

The Presidential Inauguration captured the attention of the world the other week. As leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., I was once again struck with the weight and importance of this Office. Too often in our blue jeans and t-shirt society, we forget the value of protocol.

According to Dictionary.com, protocol is the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality, precedence, and etiquette. During the Inauguration, every detail of the proceedings communicated a message of strength and order. I’m referring to the message of the ceremony itself.  During this period of uncertainty in our nation, we need reassurance that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.

Although some people criticize formality, I have nostalgia for the clearly defined etiquette of yesteryear. From balls and courtship to government and business, people understood the rules and their roles. I’m not saying that I agree with all of the rules and roles, but I am saying that often our casualness has come at the cost of courtesy.

Long live the remaining social customs that communicate respect for all, such as holding doors, sending thank you notes, and calling to RSVP for a party. These are not mere obligations, they are simple ways that we can endorse the value of each and every person.
