Choose to be an overcomer

The world encourages individuals to find themselves. It’s a bit ironic because often it is the busyness, confusion and intensity of the world that causes an individual to question or lose her or his identity. Is identity found in the family, finances, culture, fame or success of a person? Certainly, all those things can affect identity for better or worse. However, choices that are made about how to handle these areas in life also affect identity.

I am Bolt

Usain St. Leo Bolt, whose nickname is Lightning Bolt, is a retired Jamaican sprinter. He holds a world record in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 4x100 meter relays and is an 8-time Olympic gold medalist. Bolt has been described as “the fastest man alive.” He also holds the world record of 9.58 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Bolt’s identity as a champion did not come without struggles. He suffered some serious hamstring injuries among others, including injuries from a car accident. Because of his amazing speed, he often was suspected of doping, but always submitted to testing and was always found to be drug-free. He maintained his identity as a champion in spite of the struggles by choosing to be an overcomer. A biographical film titled I Am Bolt was released in 2016, detailing three of his gold medal wins.

It’s worth pointing out that his identity as a champion did not cast a shadow over his identity in Christ. Bolt is Catholic and always crosses himself before a race. He also wears a Miraculous Medal and gives God the credit for his success.

Not in name only

Christians are identified in Christ by wearing his name. However, our identity in Christ is not in name only. Our identity in Christ is reflected in the way we live our lives, the service we offer and the love we express for others. Jesus said in John 15:5:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything.”
